
Keeping Bathroom Infrared Heaters Safe (And Dry)
Putting infrared lamps in a bathroom is a bit of a battle. You’ve got steam everywhere and water splashing just about every surface. If you want that IPX5 rating—basically making sure the thing doesn’t fry when it gets wet—you can’t just slap some plastic around it and call it a day. You need a real plan to stop moisture from sneaking in and bridging the gap between the live heating element and the chassis. Because, as we all know, water and electricity are a nightmare pairing.
The reality of wet zones
Here’s the thing: water kills electrical resistance. In a steamy bathroom, condensation builds up on the quartz tube and eventually drips straight down toward the electrical terminals. To stop that, we use sealed terminals and these moisture-resistant potting compounds. Think of it as a waterproof shield. If water hits the connection point, the potting compound just blocks it. No short circuits, no ground faults, no panic.
Getting the seals right
Standard connectors like R7s or Sk15 just aren’t cut out for this. They leak. Instead, we use reinforced gaskets and heat-shrink tubing with adhesive linings. It creates a tight, physical barrier that can handle low-pressure water jets coming from any direction. But there’s a catch:thermal expansion. Quartz expands when it gets hot. If your seals are too stiff, they’ll just crack as the lamp heats up and cools down. That’s why we stick with silicone-based elastomers. They’re flexible. They let the tube “breathe” without letting the water in.
The trade-offs
Nothing is perfect. Adding all these seals and housings makes the heater a bit bulkier. Plus, it traps more heat around the terminals than you’d find in an open-air industrial lamp. You have to find a balance. If you seal the electronics box too tight, you’ll end up with “heat soak,” and your internal wiring will basically cook itself. The trick is keeping the water out while still giving the electronics enough room to vent. It’s a fine line, but it’s the only way to make it last.
