
Making Bathroom Heaters That Don’t Blind You
When we’re building infrared lamps for bathrooms—especially for those used around babies—the biggest headache isn’t actually the heat. It’s the light. Standard short-wave lamps are bright. Like, “staring-into-the-sun” bright. For a newborn with developing eyes, that kind of glare is just too much.
Dealing with the Glare
We need the warmth, but we don’t need the blinding light. To fix this, we tweak the spectral output. Basically, we use special coatings on the quartz glass or change what the filament is made of to block out those harsh blue and white tones. The result? A “soft light” feel. You still get that cozy, skin-warming heat, but the light stays gentle and safe. It’s a bit of a physics puzzle. We lean into the medium and long-wave bands. They do a great job of warming the skin without stressing out the eyes.
Surviving the Steam
Bathrooms are brutal on electronics. Between the steam and the humidity, things tend to break. To stop the glass from clouding up or cracking when it hits a temperature spike, we use high-purity quartz. We also make the seals airtight. If even a tiny bit of moisture touches that tungsten filament, the whole lamp is toast in a few weeks.
The Trade-offs
Here’s the catch: filtering the light comes with a price. Because we’re blocking those bright frequencies, the lamp won’t look as “brilliant” as a standard halogen bulb. But honestly? In a nursery or a bathroom, being super bright is a problem, not a perk. The trick is getting the wattage just right. That way, the room stays warm and toasty, even with the filters doing their job.
