Getting the Power Right
If you’re working with a small powder room—anything under 4m²—you don’t need a powerhouse. A single 400W to 600W short-wave lamp is usually plenty. If you go any higher, you’ll hit that “too hot” point way too fast. Not a great feeling when you’re just trying to wash your hands. For those mid-sized bathrooms (between 5m² and 10m²), I’d go with a dual-lamp setup or one unit in the 800W to 1200W range. Then you’ve got the big, luxury baths. If it’s over 12m², don’t just buy one giant lamp. That’s a mistake. You’ll end up with one scorching hot spot and cold corners. Instead, spread the heat out. Wire up three 600W lamps across the ceiling. It feels much more natural and keeps the whole room cozy.
Watch Your Ceiling Height
This is where most people mess up. Remember, short-wave infrared doesn’t really “heat the air.” It heats whatever it hits. If you mount a high-wattage lamp too low, you’re asking for trouble—either the fixture burns out or the person standing under it gets scorched. Keep a gap of at least 2.1 meters from the floor. And a quick heads-up: if you’re putting a 1500W lamp in a tight space, double-check your ceiling materials. You don’t want your ceiling warping because it can’t handle the heat soak.
The Logic of Saving Energy
The sweet spot is when the lamp’s output matches how fast the room loses heat. Think about it: putting a 2000W heater in a tiny 3m² room is overkill. The thermostat will just keep clicking on and off, over and over. That constant cycling is what kills the lamp’s lifespan. Match the wattage to the actual size of the room. You’ll get a steady, comfortable warmth, and your equipment will actually last.
